[Dear CareerBabe...]

Dear CareerBabe:

I have 50 college credits to date but I am not a college graduate. I would like to break into a company that hires public speakers or a company that does corporate training to become a trainer myself. What opportunities are available? I have 10 years experience as an administrative assistant as well as public speaking and theater experience.

Trainer in Training

Dear Train:

First, let me congratulate you about having a specific goal. Many job seekers do not, but in fact, having an exact focus is excellent. It will help you get there.

Now, for the hard work ahead. You should be aware that many people want to become public speakers or corporate trainers and the key to your success is twofold: first, you must have content or subject knowledge and two, you must be or become a compelling communicator and speaker. Here are a few steps to get you started:

  1. Make a list of each qualification you think a good trainer needs and then match your experience against each one. If you lack the specific experience, write down what you will need to do.
  2. Find web sites that will help you. You can visit The Expertise Center, where many expert speakers have their web sites.
Also visit Infoseek and search on the word "training". Be prepared to do homework to develop a list of 10 to 25 core sites. The American Society for Training and Development is one of the most important. Also check out the Training and Development Resource Center. It is an absolute gold mine for you. You might also be interested in Training and Development opportunities sponsored by the US Department of Labor.
  3. Start creating professional networking opportunities for yourself. Become active In local speaker associations like Toastmasters and The Chamber of Commerce.
  4. Finish your 2 or 4 year degree - especially with a major in your field. Your professors will help you get a professional position.

These will definitely get you started.

Wishing you SuccessAHEAD!
