Dear CareerBabe: I want to change jobs because I am upset with my current managers and want to get out before I either get transferred to a position I can't stand or get laid off. What is the diplomatic answer to give to future employers on why I want to leave? Signed: |

Dear Leaving: There are two parts to leaving an organization: what you say to the new organization and how you leave the old organization. I am concerned that your level of frustration could get in your way on both accounts, so "caution" is the watchword. First, when interviewing, keep your focus on two areas: contribution and growth, what you want to contribute to a company and how you want your career to grow. If you find yourself talking about your current management for more than one sentence, pinch yourself and move along to the growth/contribution areas outlined above. Second, play it cool where you are now until you have something firm under your belt. Be extremely cooperative, receptive and keep your mouth closed about your plans to move. Remember, you want good references from this company as you exit. Best of Luck! |
