I'm graduating in May. How do I tell an employer I would like a week or two before I start the job without losing the position?

Dear Naive:

This is a super question. Any employer who knows you are graduating will be happy to give you 1-2 weeks off before you start a new job. It is a "normal" part of the interview and negotiation process. Here's a tip for you: As you are a new grad and probably new to interviewing and negotiating, be sure you practice lots with someone who has more work experience than you do. Ask every possible question in your practice session and let your more experienced friend help you with typical answers. I'm sure you'll have no problem at all.
