[Dear CareerBabe...]

Dear CareerBabe:

I recently received my green card and intend to move to the US soon. In recent weeks, I have browsed the Internet for job opportunities and openings. I found a lot of information and sent out several applications -- with few responses. Is this due to a poor strategy or a badly styled resume?

How should I proceed in my job search so I find something quickly after arriving in the USA?

Signed:
Henry from Heidelberg

Dear Henry:

From your note, I don't understand exactly why a company might not want you. You have a green card -- which is a huge plus -- but we rewrote your letter so your command of English was "smoother." Frankly, I suspect that most companies might not want to take on hiring someone from abroad -- even with a green card (work permit), because they fear they will have to take on the additional burdens of:

  • paying relocation expenses or
  • providing some sort of additional training if they hire you.

Therefore, my suggestions involve your networking as much as possible with people you know who have come here and gotten employment and to not try to do too much from your current location. Focus your efforts on lining up as many people as you can to network with once you are here. Second, try to identify what you ADD to a US company by coming from another country and culture. Many US companies are interested in people who speak other languages and I would use your time while still abroad to focus on US companies that do business in your current country so you can perhaps investigate working for US headquarters once you are here.

Good luck!
