Dear CareerBabe: I have 2-1/2 yrs of college under my belt in computer science, but I can't seem to find a job in my field! I have been told that I should be able to find something, since the job market is high in this area. Not so! I have decided to complete my undergraduate degree, but in the meantime I would like to work in computer science or related area. Right now I'm working as a typist. Can you help???!!! Signed: |

Dear Nowhere: Yes, you are way under-employed! which leads to two significant questions: 1. Why?2. What are you willing to do about it?Typically, when something like this happens, there are reasons. Perhaps there are children or parents who needed you at home, you just "didn't have time" to look for another kind of job, or, last but not least, you needed an internship but were unable to accept "unpaid" employment. Some of the best ways to find a good internship (paid or unpaid) would be to go to the Department's head office and ask if there are successful alumni in the area you could talk to about internships. This would be a good first step for you to take right now. Let us know how it turns out! Good Luck! |
