Dear CareerBabe: What kind of weapons and documentation should I take into a review in order to get an overdue promotion? Signed: |

Dear Raisin: There are lots of people who follow the following principle: Best to achieve big target goals in the month of your review since this keeps these milestones in the top of your manager's mind. For my second principle, I'd take a good look at what others are being paid to do my job and have this data at the ready. Third, I'd tie all my accomplishments to the company's bottom line or savings. Last, I'd find a good buddy and practice the living daylights out of the conversation you think your boss will have with you. Practice every possible response you think s/he will make so that you are prepared before you enter the room. Remember: the less said the better and give yourself time to think about whatever is proposed. If you are asked: "Do you think a 2% raise is fair?", then respond: "You know, we've been discussing my contribution to 50% of the company's revenues in the last quarter of 1996. I'd really appreciate having at least til tomorrow morning to think about what you have proposed." |
